If you want something different do something different
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". Albert Einstein
We’ve all experienced that frustrating loop of trying but not actually managing to do something. Unfortunately, a common strategy is to keep on trying but if you don’t change what you’re doing then you’ll just keep going around in circles. You won’t break free of the old patterns of behaviour that keep you in this loop. It doesn’t mean you have to give up on what you want it just means adjusting what you’re doing to get there.
Small changes can make a big difference
If you’re changing too much too quickly and you’re leaning into your edge a bit too far then self sabotage can kick in. Procrastination, analysis paralysis, distractions, keeping super busy, avoidance are all behaviours that we can employ when we’re just too stretched and uncomfortable to do what we need to do. We can also end up following the same process time after time but the thing is if it’s not working now it’s not going to work. It’s time to change what you’re doing. So, if you’re ‘trying’ to go to the gym and just not doing it then look at what you can do instead - even if that means swapping the gym for something else. Making tweaks and adjustments to what you do can get you moving again and a small shift in the right direction can be the start of a cascade of change.
Ask yourself these questions:
How committed am I to this change/goal? Be honest with yourself.
If I were 10 percent more committed what would be different?
What has worked in the past? Do more of it.
What hasn’t worked in the past? Stop doing it.
What can you really commit to everyday to move forwards? (it can be challenging but not so much that self sabotage kicks in).
What am I going to do that’s different to make this happen?
Beating yourself up ain’t gonna change things but changing what you do just might…and if you’d like some help then let’s have a chat.
